Misha
Zavalny

Etching, aquatint, lithography, photography. Images that refuse to become only a memory.

A plate is always cut in reverse — scroll to print it
Plate 0% printed

Every print begins backwards

The plate is cut in reverse, bitten in acid, inked, wiped and pressed — only then does the image turn to face you. Misha Zavalny works with the world the same way: chimeras on old maps, linen crumpled by sleepless nights, airports where everyone is waiting for home.

Ukrainian artist living and working in Paris for almost ten years. His practice moves between spontaneous photographs taken in public space and slow studio work — lithography, etching, aquatint, screen printing. Since 2022 he has been part of the cultural front line that answers historical revisionism with images.

Chimères

World of chimeras · 2025 – 2026 · etching, aquatint, drawing

A theatre of war played by animals — chimerical, funny and pathetic — on the backs of old maps. Black humour as the last way to look at a catastrophe without looking away.

Solo show «Chimères» · art+art galerie, 28 rue de la Fontaine au Roi, Paris · 4 – 18 January 2026

“Animals and birds, chimerical, funny and pathetic, tip us — on supports of old cartography — into the den of a black humour.”

Bed sheets

Bed sheet series · 2026 · etching, aquatint

Linen remembers every night. Crumpled sheets engraved like a landscape — mountains, rivers, the topography of a sleep that did not come. Move your cursor: the folds still breathe.

Anti-héros

2022 · 100 lithographs on paper · 30 × 40 cm each

Faces — different, yet strangely alike — with their eyes bound. The colours speak of the diversity of peoples; the blindness, of how hard it is for them to hear one another.

Printed in 2022 with the collective of the print workshop of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, deliberately on poor paper: uprisings are so often born of destitution.

Waiting Hall — colour lithograph of a plane at the gate

The airport as a liminal space: exile, waiting, the fragility of home and belonging. The war is never shown — it is the weather.

After all, what is coriander and what is parsley? That is the question.

Two dances, one stone

Lithography · 50 × 60 cm · edition of 3 · 2026

1. Broken stones still remain. 2. Don Quixote and Sancho dancers. A brush on limestone, ink that stays loose — the same gesture in colour and in black.

The street
